Data Sources

StrikeMaps aggregates publicly available weather data from several providers to power both the live map and our PDF storm reports. We’re not affiliated with or endorsed by any of the organizations below.

Storm Reports

NOAA / NWS Storm Prediction Center

Preliminary hail, wind, and tornado reports are provided by the NOAA Storm Prediction Center. SPC data powers the live map, the date picker, and the in-scope event lists inside every PDF report. Report counts and locations reflect raw field observations and may be revised during subsequent quality-control review.

Radar Imagery

NOAA / Iowa State University — Iowa Environmental Mesonet

Both live and archived radar on StrikeMaps are sourced from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet (IEM), which mirrors NOAA NEXRAD composite reflectivity products. The live map renders the IEM CONUS NEXRAD base reflectivity mosaic, refreshed every five minutes. Each Day Report embeds a radar snapshot from the same archive, aligned to the storm window for the selected date.

Base Map, Satellite Imagery & Geocoding

Mapbox & OpenStreetMap

Cartography on the live map is rendered via Mapbox GL, with road, boundary, and place-name data contributed by the OpenStreetMap community. Mapbox also provides the high-resolution satellite imagery used for the property frame in every PDF report, and the geocoding service that turns a typed address into a precise property location.

If you believe a data point on StrikeMaps is inaccurate, please consult the authoritative source directly. We do not publish official weather advisories — always defer to the National Weather Service for life-safety decisions.
